As a child, my parents would take me to visit my great grandparents in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the Summer.

There were only two TVs in the house. The one I was allowed to watch only had about four black and white channels where Clifford the Big Red Dog was definitely a sad shade of charcoal.

Needless to say, I grew fond of reading very quickly in my youth–pouring through pages of a handful of books each day during our visits. I am thankful to have had the experience as I have used reading as a means of lifting myself out of nearly every situation since.

Inspired by thoughts of those long quiet summers when I would cheat my way into passing the time, it seems fitting and comical after all these years that I recently went viral with this Tweet which has been retweeted nearly 12 thousand times.

I will say it again: Books are the cheat code to life.— Tirzah Moneé Johnson 🌻 (@TirzahMJ) March 11, 2019

In 2015 I recall a time where I was burnt out.

I had goals but I lacked a clear vision of what was next for me and my career and my cheat codes to life found me by way of my thoughtful aunt. She bought me a stack of books for Christmas and I was beyond excited!

I spent all of the next few weeks pouring through the pages and taking in every line as if I was back with Grey Clifford.

The books were almost all about women entrepreneurs creating the life of their dreams.

I was two months away from starting my graduate’s degree program for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, worried about if it was a waste of money to pursue a second degree, and someone drops a beautifully wrapped box of “You got this shit. Make it happen.” in my lap.
